Majd AlhasanBachelor of Commerce in FinanceHaskayne School of Business
About me.
I’m a finance graduate of the Haskayne School of Business, based in Calgary. I currently work in financial analysis at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, where I develop and negotiate clinical trial budgets and manage accounts receivable.
Across my roles, I’ve found that process improvement is what I’m most passionate about. I look for opportunities to save time and money, then use the tools available to create solutions. Whether that’s streamlining an administrative task or developing complex automated workflows, I bring a continuous improvement mindset that has saved numerous hours across processes. Earlier roles in internal audit, accounting, and business analytics gave me a broad view of how a business operates, and I’m now looking for a financial analyst role where I can keep building solutions that help an organization run better.

Budget Development for Clinical Trial Projects
One of my primary responsibilities at the University of Calgary is reviewing and negotiating clinical trial budgets. This involves working with researchers and pharmaceutical companies to determine the resources required to complete clinical research. Before approving a budget, I assess resource allocation, verify budget accuracy, and ensure the University’s research overhead policy is applied. This process helps prevent errors in financial contracts, ensures researchers have the resources necessary to conduct clinical trials, and ensures the University is appropriately compensated for providing the equipment and facilities that support research.

Invoicing Automated Workflow
The Heritage Medical Research Clinic (HMRC) within the University of Calgary allows researchers to outsource medical procedures during busy periods. Upon completion, HMRC personnel manually create invoices listing the services provided and bill the researchers accordingly. With over 120 researchers utilizing these services, I saw an opportunity to significantly reduce the time required to prepare and send invoices.

UCalgary Process Transformation · Heritage Medical Research Clinic
Instead of using paper and pencil to track which procedures were completed and the studies they were performed for, I created a shared Excel workbook that the HMRC medical team uses to enter information such as project details, procedures completed, and dates of completion.
The workbook uses several formulas to automatically populate standardized information, such as procedure costs, accounting strings, and UCalgary project numbers. This information is necessary to ensure funds are accurately transferred internally from researchers to the HMRC clinic. Additionally, automatically populating this information significantly reduces the effort required during data entry.
On the 10th of each month, I gather the previous month’s billing information, which consists of approximately 1,500 rows of data. This consolidated dataset serves as the source of information for generating invoices through a Microsoft Word template, which automatically populates invoicing addresses, pricing, and quantities.
I then initiate a mail merge, which generates completed invoices for each researcher and automatically emails them to the appropriate recipients.
The Impact
Invoicing Automated Workflow
This workflow automated data entry, invoice creation, and distribution. A process that previously required a dedicated individual now takes just 30 minutes of my time and significantly reduces the effort required by HMRC staff to track billing information.

Budget Intake Automation
The Finance Team receives standardized emails notifying them of upcoming budget reviews. Staff then manually copy information such as Budget ID, Funder, and Project Title into a shared working document. With up to 20 notifications arriving daily, I saw an opportunity to automate this process and reduce manual data entry.

Budget Intake Automation · University of Calgary
I developed an automated workflow using Outlook rules and Power Automate to identify incoming budget review emails and extract seven key pieces of information. The workflow then automatically updates the shared document with incoming projects, eliminating the need for manual data entry.
The Impact
Budget Intake Automation
Since implementation, the workflow has automatically processed approximately 1,000 notifications, saving around 50 working hours. It continues to save time as new notifications arrive while reducing the errors that can occur with manual data entry.

Financial Reports & Analysis
My role at AMN Construction presented the opportunity to apply financial analysis in a smaller company. This allowed me to connect my work more directly to its impact on business operations. Specifically, my financial reports helped identify key cost drivers within the organization.

Financial Reports & Analysis
AMN Construction · November 2024 to August 2025
After completing numerous project-based financial reports, I noticed disproportionately high spending during the early stages of construction across most projects. I discussed this with company leadership to understand the reasons behind the trend.
The Finding
We found that early construction stages required extensive planning and preparation work that could only be completed by experienced crew members. During this time, other workers often had limited work while waiting for instructions, contributing to unused labour costs.
The Solution
Financial Reports & Analysis
During the early stages of new projects, we assigned more experienced crew members to planning and preparation while reallocating less experienced workers to active projects where their time could be used more effectively.
The Results
Financial Reports & Analysis
Projects using this strategy saw an approximately 8% reduction in costs. To measure the impact, I divided project financial reports into three stages: early, mid, and late. I then calculated early-stage costs as a percentage of total project costs to compare spending across projects.

Before changing anything, I learn how the work gets done today and who it affects.
I look for steps that are manual, repetitive, or slow, since that is usually where time gets lost.
I weigh which problems are worth solving, using tools like a SWOT analysis to compare strengths, weaknesses, and risks.
I look at what is already available, such as Excel, Power Platform, SharePoint, and AI, before suggesting anything new.
I share the idea with leadership and test it on a small scale before committing to it.
Once it is in place, I track results such as hours saved or turnaround time, and keep refining.
